Match Reports
Sparta Farnham (2) 3 - 4 (3) Boca Seniors

We had a strong seven man squad lined up for this on game day but unfortunately at the 11th hour we lost Ally which left us with the bare six. It was a big blow losing such an influential player but we still had a decent team and with two wins over Boca in recent history, we still had a chance at winning even if it was quite a lot smaller than with seven.

We decided to start out fairly defensively since no-one had kicked a ball in six weeks and we figured Boca would come out firing since they are all skilled on the ball and would likely enjoy much more possession than us.

Sure enough, they flew out the gates and took an early lead but we managed to level it up from the resulting centre via James. Boca notched two more fairly quickly but our heads stayed up and James scored a great solo effort before half time taking it around the stricken keeper to get us back within one.

3-2 at half time did perhaps flatter us a bit given that Boca had probably had 75% of the possession but once we got to grips with their passing football and started giving them less space they did not create too many decent chances.

The second half started and we conceded quite quickly which was a bit of a hammer blow but again out heads did not drop and we kept our shape well. Things stayed at 4-2 with Mason, our stand in keeper, making some nice stops including a great one square in the chest after standing up really well to Boca striker-s effort.

With 15 to go, James found himself one on one with the Boca keeper who dragged him to the ground as he went around him. There was a rather ugly scene as the keeper took offence to James saying he should be sent off but it was defused and he was sin binned for the remainder of the game. James MISSED the resulting penalty which is the first time in his entire life that that has happened but with Boca a man light for the remainder we had a really good chance to steal the game.

Somehow we managed to make the simple task of man marking and always having a spare man really complicated and failed to take advantage of the mismatch in numbers. We did eventually score with James completing his hat-trick but it was too little too late and time ran out. Had we scored our third 10 minutes earlier we would have likely notched a fourth and maybe more but as it was Boca worked hard with five players and deserved the win.

We are left ruing what might have been and must do better in the next game. To be fair to the lads, everyone stuck to the task well and fitness was good considering the break. Other than the penalty/red card incident, the game was played in great spirits and we look forward to the return leg.

Player ratings:

Mason - GK - stand in keeper who will be back in defence on Wed/Thu games when our new designated keeper arrives. Considering his lack of experience in goal had a great game. 8/10.

Ben/Lasty - DF - played solidly rarely putting a foot wrong and solidly keeping the Boca strikers mostly in check. 8/10.

Alex/Daly - MF - full of running all game and supported James well. Not too many gilt edged chances in this one but they grabbed all three assists. 8/10.

James - CF - grabbed a hat-trick but missed a penalty which I am sure will haunt him for days and weeks to come. 8/10.
