Oh dear. Not the most ideal start to the defence of premier league title but in the end we had to battle back to earn a draw. As with a number of teams in the SRPFL, Hampton are either a very good side or a very average side, depending on who turns up for them. This week I think they had their best side out and they were certainly a very good side that dominated large periods of the game.

We looked very rusty having not played a 6aside game in about 12 weeks. Also with Robbie and John suffering a bit with viruses and Jamie coming into the game with a groin strain, it was never going to be an easy ride. 3 subs is also definately too many so hopefully we-ll be missing 1 or 2 from the squad every week from this week on?!

We started the better and took a 1-0 lead when Trussler lashed in a beauty from out wide on the right wing. Then we really should have pulled away but were punished when the Lions made the most of our gun ho tactics and went 2-1 infront. Both goals very simple 2 on 1-s that led to a simple job at the back post. Undeservedly we then drew level before the break at 2-2 through Ed who surged forward from midfield and slotted past the keeper.

First 15 mins of the second half Hampton outplayed, going 4-2 up in the process. To be honest it should have been more but we had seemingly run out of ideas as we created little or nothing. We pulled ourselves together for the closing stages, brought the scores level at 4-4 and then should have won it. Robbie hit the inside of the post, John was clea through a couple of times and on a few occasions a ball across goal would have lead to a simple tap in but a shot was taken from an impossible angle!

So a shame this one but taking nothing away from Hampton Lions who deserved at least a draw from this and should have arguably won it! I hope they can keep a team together this season as if they do, they are good enough to be up there with us.

Man of the match went to Trussler. Could have taken it off him when he lost his rag but a screamer of a goal and the fact that he was the best of an average bunch just knicks it for him.
Another good performance from the Lions, and it would have to be said a great point won considering the finishing positions of both sides in last seasons Premier League.

Glad to say we pushed on after a solid outing against Rogues and kept the shape that had served us so well in the opener, remaining pretty well organised throughout. A tight first half finished 2-2, with two simple finishes for us (Robinson and Dougherty) sandwiched by a Hammer goal either side, one of which was a pretty special finish to put them one up.

The second half we did well and maybe should have pushed for more goals when we were on top, a good finish by Phil Blackmore was followed quickly by a somewhat lucky tap-in at the far post to put us 4-2 up with around 15 minutes left to play. The fortuitous nature of that goal seemed to spur Hammer back into action, they came very close to scoring on more than one occasion before they got a goal, and then another to draw it at 4-4.

Hopefully we can keep the core of this squad together and put in these kinds of performance every week, a lot of promise to be taken from these first two games, and already a point more than we managed against these two sides last season!
