Match Reports
Sparta Farnham (4) 8 - 3 (1) Lionhead

After a dodgy result vs England United last week, this was a great win for us against a side that have a similar set of results to us so far this season. History suggested we should edge it but right up until the 11th hour we only had a team of five ready to go which did not include a goalkeeper. Cometh the hour and cometh the man in the shape of Mark Criddle who saved us from a whupping not just by turning up to complete the six but also having a great game in a position unfamiliar to him.

Although James got six goals and had a great game to get his season firmly back on track, this was a top team effort and everyone played at their very best denying Lionhead time and space all over the pitch. If we played every game like this, we would be very tough to beat in Div 1 which is very encouraging.

After going in 4-1 up due to some early magic from James, we conceded twice at the start of the second half leaving the match precariously balanced at 4-3. At that point, it looked like it could go down to the wire but we killed it off by scoring two quick goals and then ran out 8-3 winners without looking like capitulating. We kept our shape well for the full 60mins and everyone kept their heads on both teams to produce a 100% fair game.

Best of luck to Lionhead who will safely remain in Div 1 this season and no doubt be challenging along with us for the lower promotion spot come the end of the season.

Player ratings:

Criddle - GK - stepped in right at the death to save us from having to field five so was instantly a hero. As it turned out, he had a great game and deserves the star. 10/10.

Ben - DF - solid as a rock and did not make a single mistake. Definitely now 100% dependable as a Sparta defender and still handy on the odd foray forward. 9/10.

Lasty - DF - also mistake free, put in plenty of last ditch blocks to deny the Lionhead attackers. 9/10.

Alex - MF - usual high work rate and great foil for James dragging defenders away with his runs. Awesome on the counter attack. 9/10.

Daly - MF - full of lung busting runs all night and scored a top class goal from out wide. Got back well all game to keep the middle of the pitch in check. 9/10.

James - CF - after a bad spell by his standards, this game was a return to form with six goals including some of the neatest finishing we have seen this season. Definitely deserving of a star. 10/10.
As mentioned in Sparta-s report this should have been a close game...

We worked reasonable hard but there was nowhere near enough creative play to trouble their solid side. We also failed to cope with their striker James F who killed the game off a while before the end.

We need a striker, and we need to work on our passing and possession to give our team more strength all over the pitch.

Well played Sparta, look forward to the next game!
